#7592 closed defect (fixed)

Latex is no longer typset under 1.1.0 or 1.1.1, reverting to 1.0.6 solves problem

Milestone: Adium 1.3 Component: Plugin
Version: 1.1 Severity: regression

Patch Status:

Description

Something broke the LaTeX support for me in 1.1.0 and 1.1.1. I am running Mac OS X 10.4.10 on a PowerPC Mac (AL Powerbook). I have Equation Service 1.0 installed and working find under all releases of Adium prior to 1.1.0. Reverting to 1.0.6 has caused LaTeX typesetting to start working again. Equations Service doesn't appear to get called by Adium 1.1.0 or 1.1.1, so I think details of my TeTex distribution are irrelevant. Let me know if you need additional information.

  • Severity changed from normal to regression

The Latex Plugin was removed from the build in 1.1. It should be released separately on adiumxtras.com as soon as we have a decent plugin API.

I had just checked and found that. Restoring it from 1.0.6 seems to work for me, although I have only tested it minimally. I thought I read in the Release Notes for 1.1.0 that Latex support was enhanced to handle code with \; in it. Maybe I missed it , but completely removing LaTeX support without notice was not much of an enhancement for me.

Yeah - I actually see no reason for it to be an external plugin rather than part of the build as it was previously. We'll discuss this further.

If you are going to rewrite te plugin in some way, take a look at this: http://trac.adiumx.com/ticket/6472
(I don't know if it still was a problem im 1.0.6, but i think so ;) )

I think we should leave this removed. Simply put I don't believe that even 90% of our user base needs this plugin, and that the last 10% who do can go to the xtras site to download it.

This is (by nature) a rather complicated feature to provide built-in. It requires a lot of configuration, which a separate xtra could perhaps package up in some way to make things easier. I can't justify us doing anything like shipping TeX and Equation Services with Adium itself, but with a plugin on its own that would be a non issue, someone would just have to make a pkg or script to do that.

The benefits of making this a separate plugin outweigh the downsides of a small fraction of people not being able to find this.

However, I think we should provide the plugin as-is now, either in the way we were doing it before, or attached to the latexinadium wiki page, or uploaded to the xtras site.

I would like to get freakman to start looking at this. He seems like he likes working with this plugin, and I think it would be a good fit for someone who likes this to work on it. I'll talk to him later today if I remember to.

The important thing is that this change should go in the Change Log that is displayed for recent versions. Dropping features without notice causes confusion and may cause many people to waste time as they try to figure out what went wrong.

It took me quite a bit of googling for combinations of "Adium LaTeX Equation Service" before I got to this ticket.

It would have kinda been nice for the removal of the LaTeX plugin to at least have been published in the official Change Log (isn't that what it's for?) so that those of us who've heard about this great feature of Adium try it and can't figure out why it doesn't work.

Is there any way to get the plugin up and available in adiumxtras? It's been 3 months since the last post here so I'm inquiring to see if any progress has been made.

Just to check on the status of this plugin, since i wasn't able to find it in adiumxtras.
I'm running adium 1.1.4 and i have equation services installed. To have this working would be really helpful!

  • Keywords changed from latex, math to latex math
  • Milestone changed from Needs dev review to Adium X 1.4

It does seem like perhaps we should put it back in until it is made into an appropriate plug-in and uploaded to the Xtras site...

Either method should probably be decided at some point. Leaving this on dev review will get the decision nowhere.

That would be great, thank you!

Yes that would be great. Thanks!

Perhaps it is possible to integrate jsMath in Adium. This would be much smoother for the user.

But I don't know if a) the License is compatible and b) wether it is actually possible to do that.
