Just wanted to say I've got some preliminary code written on this. It doesn't work yet, but it's debug&polish time, not "get something done someday" time :)

Badge shows up now :) Just have to get it to disappear correctly, and have numbers on it.

Committed and cleaned up some. Still may need a setting for controlling it, perhaps some tweaking. Marking as "fixed" for now.

I love the badge - I've wanted that for a while but didn't think to file a bug...

But In 1.0a5 the badge appears down the bottom left, whereas the Mac OS convention is to be up the top right, and somehow it just looks wrong on my Dock (I know, I'm strange - indulge me!).

I suppose it isn't actually Mac OS X convention but Mail, NewNewsWire, Acquisition and I think iCal have it up the top right, so I'm kinda used to it in my own way.

Thanks.

Everything else seems to be using top right -- why aren't we?

Because it conflicts with the 'show name in dock icon' event action which is part of the default event set. The badge needs to either be in the bottom of the icon or mutually exclusive with that option (in which case the option should move to advanced message preferences rather than existing as an Event action - probably a sane move, really).

Might it make more sense to have an event for 'message received' that is something like "display information in the dock icon" which allows you to either show the name badge, the count badge, both or none (by deselecting the event)? To me it makes more sense for this pref to be associated with events than hidden on the advanced pane (where it took me 15 minutes to track down in 1.0b8)
