Slowdowns under VoiceOver

Reported by: thewordnerd Owned by: evands
Milestone: Adium X 1.0.1 Component: Adium UI
Version: Severity: normal

Patch Status:

Adium 1.0B20 (though I've experienced this with the latest stable version as well) under OS X 10.4.8 (though, again, I've experienced this under earlier versions) performs very poorly when VoiceOver is running. There doesn't appear to be any particular action, other than launching Adium, that causes this issue. My PPC mini simply degrades from performing well to performing extremely poorly when Adium launches, making any continued use a very slow process. VoiceOver also produces lots of "busy" messages when attempting to navigate around any Adium window, which I assume indicates that the spinning beachball has appeared. There are no other changes than simply launching Adium, and I've predictably witnessed this behavior over several application launches.

(In [18926]) Some exceptions at the top-level are not meant to ever be considered, it seems. NSAccessibilityExpcetion exceptions, for example, are thrown regularly for controls which don't have full accessibility support... but they are silently dropped normally. Our overzealous exception handling was (1) logging them to console and (2) going to pains to get the stack trace out of them, a slow process.

For exceptions we choose to ignore, we now fully ignore them. Additionally, if the exception has a name or reason known to be worth ignoring, we don't waste effort generating the stack trace.

This fixes problems with Adium + VoiceOver causing slowdowns. Fixes #6094.

I'm still not sure what's up with the "-[NSArray addObject:] attempt to add nil" crashes which are also somehow tied into VoiceOver.
