#2880 closed defect (fixed)

Paste happy mediums: paste, paste with formatting, paste and match style

Reported by: evands Owned by: evands
Milestone: Adium X 1.0 Component: Adium UI
Version: Severity: normal
Keywords: Cc:
Patch Status:

Make an extra paste item which performs 1.0svn's paste (pasteAsRichText:). Make paste itself do a pre-processed paste which strips color and possibly font information from strings but otherwise leaves them alone (retaining things like links).

Similar to #2601, and seems to be in conflict with [14152].

It seems to me like it would be better to paste without formatting than with, since most of the time I (and I would think others) use the chat input field as plain text, occasionally using bold and italics but not often changing font size or color. It seems more intuitive for it to retain the formatting I usually use than to substitute the color scheme of wherever I copied from.

Command-Option-Shift-V is also a very difficult hand position, requiring some talented contortion of the hand... what happened to Apple's accessibility and human interface guidelines? By what logic does "Paste Style" take higher precedence over pasting actual content?

At the least, could it be an option to reverse these?

The shortcuts on those are what are used throughout OS X... They're ridiculous, I agree, but unfortunately it's ridiculousness Apple has decided to propagate on us all, and it's better to be consistent across applications.

Also: the paste command as described in this ticket originally is intended to work the way you want. I want paste to match your colors and font but also retain links, images, and bold/italic/underline. Paste and match style is a plain text paste (as seen in other applications, such as Mail and TextEdit) while Paste with Formatting would include all style information.

I'd like to point to this forum topic:

where are examples how html copy&paste can be annoying.

That forum thread would not be resolved by the original description I think. Not totally sure on that though

(In [16240])

  • Paste now leaves bold/italics/underline/font/size etc. but strips colors, alignment, images, etc.
  • Added a new paste item, Paste with Colors and Images, which does a traditional paste with rich text operation.

Closes #2880

Another VERY anoying thing is if you paste something, your SUBSEQUENT messages get screwed up and maintain the font and style of what you pasted.
