#14361 closed defect (fixed)

Message time popup interferes with copy-paste using "Stockholm"

Reported by: IWishThatAdiumWereWorking Owned by: mathuaerknedam
Milestone: Adium 1.4.2 Component: Adium Core
Version: Severity: normal

Patch Status:

Description (last modified by Robert)

In Adium 1.4b19, the time that messages were sent or received appears as a small popup above the message when the cursor is above each message. This popup makes it very difficult to perform a copy-paste operation, because you can't see (or possibly select) what you are highlighting while the popup covers it.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Send and receive some messages
  2. Try to copy one by highlighting it with your cursor
  3. The time that the message was added to the message stack pops up on the right side of the line with the message
  4. Copying becomes extremely difficult, because the message is now below the popup. It's not possible to see what you are highlighting, and the popup may be interfering with the selection mechanism.

Expected results

The interface doesn't interfere with reading or highlighting messages.

Actual results

I had to highlight more of the message I wanted to copy and modify it after I had pasted it into another window.

Doesn't happen in b18.

Does this happen with all bundled message styles?

No. I use Stockholm, and see the problem there. If I switch to Smoke, the problem does not occur. I'm not sure which of those are bundled, although I think both are.

The styles bundled with Adium 1.4 are Gone Dark, minimal_mod, Mockie, Renkoo, Smooth Operator, Stockholm and yMous.

It only happens with Stockholm of the ones in that list. I should note that copy-paste has other problems with other styles - You get times and formatting characters embedded in the middle of lines. But the popup problem only occurs with Stockholm.

Message styles were updated in beta 19, some things are good, other not so.
I tried the Stockholm message style (Smooth Operator is my default) and, yes, that pop-up is really annoying if you mouse-hover to follow a long message or if you prefer a big font size.
In Smooth Operator timestamp is fixed, maybe it should be fixed for Stockholm too, or pop-up should appear on the opposite side; another option is to put a margin on the right hand side, just for the timestamp to pop-up in its own space, but I think that would not be good.

(In d0ecfdc21b6f) Stockholm: make on-hover timestamps disappear on click. They'll never come back without a page reload - hopefully this is a temporary work around until I find a better solution. Refs #14361.

As a workaround until mathuaerknedam refines his fix, you can pull up the chat transcript viewer and copy it out of there.

Resolution: fixed

Fixed by reverting to previous (pre 1.4) behavior in 1.4.2 and 1.5.
