#12636 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Allow NO GROUPS in Facebook support

Reported by: ytsejam Owned by: BigBrownChunx
Milestone: Component: Service/Facebook
Version: Severity: normal
Keywords: facebook, groups Cc:
Patch Status:

Description

Facebook support in Adium_1.4hgr2538 now displays Facebook contacts in the groups they are sorted by in Facebook.com

This creates a hip of new groups in Adium. Lots of noise you could say.

Previously all Facebook contacts were displayed in 1 group - Facebook.

My suggestion/feature request is to bring this back. Allow us to either have all Facebook contacts in 1 group, or sorted by their "original" groups in Facebook.com

When I am in Facebook.com, I do not mind the seperation. In Adium, on my desktop, it is very important for me (and I suspect many others), to have these sorted by -- Differently -- than in Facebook.com.

Currently, creating a new Facebook group and move everyone to there is not feasible.

  1. what if you have 300 contacts? One by one? No...
  2. it also changes the group itself in Facebook.com, thus, ruining the very important seperation of contacts (work, friends, family, etc).

Please allow us to customize our Facebook experience via Adium. Properly.

I just had this happen to me. I had adium groups for friends and another for acquaintances. When I updated to adium 1.4b8, it split up my friends group contacts into various facebook friend list groupings. This is wrong, wrong, wrong. To add insult to injury, reinstalling adium 3.5 did not fix this and I had to manually redo my adium contract groups.

I was glad to have my friends' profile pictures back, but I didn't notice them until I had to sort through all of my groups. I think I've fixed it somewhat by going to Facebook and deselecting each group under the 'Display these lists in Chat:' option under 'Friend Lists'. While it now seems to be showing up as one group, it's still titled 'Other Friends' and not 'Facebook'. In reality, it's butchered to 'Oth…ends', making for a very unsightly group bubble.

Thanks for that comment about modifying the facebook chat lists via the facebook interface. That fixed my problem also. Since I never use that web based chat I never realized that facebook was grouping my facebook contacts via the lists I had created.

I contacted Adium about this too. I wonder if a solution would be NESTING GROUPS??? Having sub categories within a group. I don't know if this is the best solution. I'd be happy with an option to just combine all of facebook into one group.

comment:10 Changed 10 years ago by Nick G

I'd prefer if we could just combine contacts as usual. Currently, if I combine a Facebook contact with any of my others, the contact shows up twice in the list. Once where the contact used to reside before this update, and once where "Facebook" thinks this contact should be.

There is a workaround for this, altho it takes a bit to setup. Create a group named facebook. Add everyone you have on facebook into that group, go into the facebook website, and open the facebook chat at the bottom of your screen, at the top, there is an option for friend lists, uncheck everything except the facebook group. These options apparently pass through the api to adium. Only one group shows up for me now.

and yes, I would also prefer to have a combine into one group option...

I've just added facebook to Adium, and I have the exact same request. Please allow a setting so that we can have all our Facebook contacts in only one group. Like there's for Twitter.

Keep up..:)

Turn off the groups on Facebook if you don't want to use them.

that is so not cool to set this to wontfix with this comment. there seems to be a valid user demand (including me), and one guy simply says "don't use it on FB if you don't like it". without going into ANY thinking here.

me, personally, i'd like to see this. and I WANT to use FB groups in FB, but not in adium. now, what? is my way the wrong way?

sorry, adium is REALLY great, and you do a fine job here. but this is uncool.

Yes, re-open this bug. I have many facebook contacts in many different groups, hence they might appear five times in my Adium list. I don't have that screen estate (and to add up to the matter, I currently have 12 facebook group headings in my Adium list. How many pixels are wasted there?).

OTOH, I have one Facebook group I want to (not) see in Adium "Inactive" - that is, people I kind of just am friend with for reference and never expect to chat with. I have put them in a separate group because I don't want to waste screen estate on 80 contacts I never gonna talk to.

The fix for this would require me to allow some groups to be visible (but minimized) while contacts in other groups should just be displayed in a generic facebook group.

I'm now using the Facebook XMPP access method. Previously, if Facebook added a group to Adium, disabling it in Facebook would remove the group from Adium. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore (I'm using Adium 1.4b19). I accidentally created the group in Adium when I added a group in Facebook, but failed to disable it in the chat before Adium picked it up…

Now I'm stuck manually removing all the contacts from this group (as I've had to do previously with Adium contacts not being included in the Facebook group).

comment:19 Changed 9 years ago by trav

yeah this is insanely frustrating. There should just be a check box to ignore facebook groups (like it was in 1.3)...

To me this sounds like people got used to the lack of a feature (Facebook lists) and now that the lists are reflected in Adium, people are somehow upset that the behavior changed. But those lists are the ones that you defined in a different place, and I don't see why we should respect them any less than serverside groups on any other chat service. It would be out of our way to do this change specifically for Facebook and would be against the XMPP spec.

comment:21 Changed 9 years ago by the-me

I think differently. I think, that if users have a desire for something, than this something is by definition valid. And if it's hard, or does require bending some code a bit, or is not part of a spec, well, bad luck. Code is the method of realizing demand, in my eyes.

I see that this is all done in someones free time, so "I have no time" is a valid thing to say. "I don't want to" also. But "well, just cripple your facebook experience so that adium works like you want to" is NOT (comment by Robby, 2009-10-29).

paradoxmo - Facebook groups are...Facebook groups, not XMPP groups. Facebook happen to translate them to XMPP but people use Facebook groups for Facebook purposes not XMPP purposes. Hence this bug need to be fixed.

Another difference between Facebook and other IM systems is that people generally have maybe ten times the number of connections on Facebook compared to other IM systems. For this reason, Facebook need Facebook specific solutions.

I think part of the angry messages here are due to a misunderstanding (atleast I didn't realise how to do this at first). You can still use groups on Facebook, just not in the Chat there. Just go to the Facebook chat and hide ALL groups. This will still show all your friends, just not sorted per group. Now you might have to delete and re-create the Facebook chat account in Adium (I had to), and voila! All friends listed without group. :)

With Facebook's new Chat update, groups are no longer displayed in chat and can no longer be disabled from propagating to Adium. To disable groups entirely in Facebook disables its entire group-based privacy feature.

Every time I create a new group and add people, I lose track of Facebook contacts because the group is added to the bottom of the contact list which is hidden behind the Dock. I'm basically removing people from groups by hand using Adium (although that is not reflected on Facebook). It would simply be very nice to have the option of disabling the automatic creation of new groups on an account on a case by case basis.
