Version: 1.4hg Severity: normal

Hey, it would be great to be able to use the irc command of '/list' to be able to view all available channels on a server.

What are your thoughts?

  • Component changed from Service/IRC to Adium UI
  • Milestone set to Adium 1.5
  • Owner zacw deleted
  • Summary changed from List all channels in IRC to Support for displaying room lists

libpurple already supports room lists, we just don't have a UI for it.

I feel that this is somewhat of a must-have for IRC support.

I have enjoyed being able to use Adium for much of my IRC need since it became available in the 1.4.x beta.

My level of usage of IRC is pretty minimal, but being able to actually get the list of available channels on a server would be extremely useful.

Any progress here? If I would want to implement that myself, where should I start?

albert, I don't think anyone is currently working on this. You are very welcome to take this up! :)

Even though it didn't work well yesterday, try asking in #adium-devl. If that doesn't work, you can still email the mailing list:

Albert, are you working on this?

comment:6 Changed 7 years ago by albert

No, sorry, not right now. I planned to but no time at the moment.

  • Milestone changed from Adium 1.5 to Good idea for "later"

This is the main feature that stops me from using Adium as my only IRC client.

I agree with frobnic8, it's such a standard of IRC to be able to see the list of available channels. It's extremely frustrating not to have this available. If UI is the only problem, I would happily deal with it just outputting a channel list in the window you're in, or in a status window that's just like a chat, (there was a system tab on joining for a while, not sure where that went or if I accidentally shut that off at some point...that would work too)...

if anyone is struggling with creating something more significant, any sort of stop gap of SOME visible /list solution really would help.

This ability to discover what channels exist, is really a basic functionality. If Adium can't do it, and it can't in 1.5rc4 that I'm running, then it really shouldn't be claimed that IRC is supported.

There is some functionality, yes, but this really makes un-usable. This means I have to have Colloquoy to find the list of channels I can join? Beyond ridiculous. The fact that Adium just beeps at you when you type /list in the server window of the irc connection is also a bug. The debug window doesn't even show why there was a beep.

Even just having it spew the output to the debug log would be almost a work-around. Yes, a server that has a very large list of channels is a problem...and someone who uses that server is probably not going to be searching for a useful channel; they're on there for a reason.

Is this REALLY still not an option, with no work around?

Rather elementary I would think... I may need a different client.

comment:13 Changed 3 years ago by Rockin' Kat

Yeah. This one feature would make Adium the best option for IRC on OS X... As it is, this is why I stopped using Adium for IRC. I really miss having Adium's transcript logging for IRC. But not enough to put up with needing another client just to view channel lists.

Is this function (to show existing irc channels via the '/list'-command) on the Adium Roadmap? BTW, your captcha-settings are much to hard. It is almost impossible to read this.

comment:15 Changed 3 years ago by Robby

To my knowledge, nobody is working on this particular feature.

Yeah, the captcha is not ideal but it seems it's keeping out most spammers at least.

How has this simple feature not been implemented in some way in 5 years? Just piping the server responses to a "console" window would suffice.
