Changes for new MobileMe service

Reported by: meandcat Owned by: nobody
Milestone: Adium 1.3 Component: Service/Other
Version: Severity: normal
Keywords: Cc:
Patch Status:

The new MobileMe service will include an AIM account just like the current .Mac service does. When MobileMe finally launches all references to .Mac should be changed to MobileMe in Adium's interface.

Plus: The new addresses already work as AIM screennames. But when i select .Mac as account type in the Adium menu logging in doesn't work because "" gets automatically added and "name@…" certainly can't work.

Milestone: Adium X 1.3

I think we should change this before 1.3 is released.

We can't just remove the appending of as it will then cause all existing entries to fail to connection since they will no longer have it appended. Perhaps we should scan for the entry of an "@" symbol in the username, and take it as is if it exists, otherwise append the

I just uploaded a set of MobileMe icons in different resulutions, although i'm not sure if they might be used for an Adium icon set because they are taken directly from the official MobileMe updater from Apple, so maybe they are covered by some restrictive license or something. I have no clue of all those licensing questions, but maybe the icons help anyway...

Are addresses automatically upgraded to addresses? What happens to current subscribers?

Yes. remains valid as well.

Argh. I really don't think it's awesome to clutter our services list with both .Mac and MobileMe. Any thoughts? Or is it a necessary evil?

Fully convert to MobileMe, allow both and as valid UIDs.

Every former .mac user now has two AIM accounts tied to his new MobileMe account: one ends with and the other one ends with Both of them have their own Buddy List, so the different IDs are not interchangeable. New users who signed up for the service after the change don't have the option, they only get the ID. My suggestion would be that you only have one entry in the services list, which is called MobileMe, because this is the new name of the service, it just allows different IDs, while .Mac doesn't exist anymore. So there's no extra clutter in the services list As i suggested above you could add a dropdown menu to the 'add new MobileMe account' window, where the user can choose if he wants to use or as the extension of his username. The standard preselection should be in this window, because new subscribers to the service might not now that there has been something else, so having as the preselection might be confusing for new users...

Typically Apple has allowed use of icons like this so long as you're registered with them, which we are - that's how we can use the Apple Bonjour icon, for example.

(In [24385]) Added MobileMe service, which defaults to an address but allows addresses, as well. Made the .Mac service hidden, which means that existing accounts will continue to show up and work but the service no longer appears in service menus. Fixes #10399
