If facebook decides to support xmpp, we'll happily (and easily!) add an account type in Adium. Otherwise it'll be a long slog of reverse engineering that may or may not happen.

  • milestone set to Good idea for "later"

Will file it in here until we know if it will be xmpp-based or not.

I really hope, that the libpurple team not even thinks about wasting a development second on this one, if the zuckerbergers decided to go the propitiary path. if they went xmpp it would be a really nice additional feature for this social networking platform

Not that it is likely to matter, but it appears that Digsby has already implemented this feature:  http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/05/01/digsby-adds-support-for-facebook-chat/ Perhaps their work can be copied?

Digsby is not open source.

Not sure where this SF project is heading...  http://sourceforge.net/projects/pidginfbchat/

Actually, the reverse-engineering has already been done. There even exists a Facebook Chat client written totally in Ruby:  http://coderrr.wordpress.com/2008/05/06/facebook-chat-api/ (note: the ruby version may not work if you don't have the needed gems, and you might have to add require 'RubyGems' as the first line of the code, but that's not important here) Hopefully someone will pick this up and add the needed support to libpurple.

Fixed in [23362]. Thanks for the Ruby link, d235j - that was quite helpful :)

facebook just anounced, that they'll add a xmpp service. so probably it's best to pull this facebook specific protocol from adium again (unbloating) :-)
