Seemingly random disconnections from AIM due to timeout

Reported by: stackerboy Owned by: nobody
Milestone: Component: Service/AIM
Version: 1.2.1 Severity: normal
Keywords: AIM ICQ randomly disconnect time out timeout Cc:
Patch Status:

Description

Approximately every 20 minutes, AIM disconnects unexpectedly and after a moment reconnects. During this time MSN and Yahoo are uninterrupted and other users on the contacts list are still visible.

I have watched Adium and iChat at the same time, and iChat doesn't skip a beat when Adium loses AIM.

During the disconnection from AIM, people I am conversing with witness me disappear and then reappear at the same time I am seeing it on my end.

I have a brand new MacBook running 10.5.1, and usually am connected to the internet by dial-up. I haven't checked to see if it occurs while the MacBook is connected by a wi-fi connection, but I suspect it is. My previous machine was a 350 mHz G3 with 10.3.9 on it on dial-up, and it performed flawlessly. I am unsure about the Adium version number on that, but it was the newest that would run on that OS.

ReportingBugs <-- debug logging would be very handy. Also, please try this on another network to see if it is persistent... I believe this is to do with router problems. We've had reports of MSN connections doing exactly this while all other services are fine, so I doubt it has anything to do with any one particular service type.

Okay, I downloaded the debugging version yesterday, and have the event recorded.

Hopefully that will be helpful in determining why this is happening.

I have been sitting in town, connected to the internet via a wireless public router for about half an hour without any AIM disconnection. It may well be the way Adium interacts with dial-up...?

Seems to just be a timeout issue... it's odd that iChat isn't experiencing the same problem. On one hand, perhaps the timeout is too sensitive/short... but on the other, lengthening it would only increase the latency when the connction actually does drop (a much more common use case than the connection being so slow as to not receive the response message in time).

I think this should be filed in  libpurple Trac for futher investigation.

Greetings - I am having a very similar error only in my case it is affecting all of my IM services (I am currently running MSN, AIM, YIM and ICQ). Basically, after a certain period of time (in my case I estimate approximately 15-20 minutes) Adium disconnects and reconnects to all my services. While this bug occurs on my desktop (which is an older Dual 450mhz G4 tower), this bug does not seem to occur on my laptop (A brand new Intel MacBook) running the same system, version of Adium, and connecting to the same network (this is a wireless network by the way).

Here is the information for my bug: • Steps to reproduce: In my case, simply allowing the application to run for a given amount of time seems to produce the issue. I would estimate it disconnects and reconnects every 15-20 minutes - and it disconnects and reconnects all of my services. I am currently running ICQ, MSN, YIM, and AIM • The version of your Adium and OS X: Adium 1.2.3, OS 10.4.11 • Troubleshooting results: I have tried renaming / creating new preferences, re-adding all my IM accounts, etc. and it still seems to occur. It also occurs using Adium default settings (i.e. no Xtras) • Console.app output: Don't think it flags one as the app itself doesn't crash, just all my IM accounts disconnect and reconnect.

Let me know if any additional information is required.

CanrageAsada: This bug report is for AIM only, and appears to be caused by flakey network conditions paired with the way timeouts are handled in AIM. If your desktop is plugged in to the router directly, then either the network card in the tower or the cable or the port in the router is likely to blame. If it is wireless then it is likely the wireless adapter in the tower, or because the tower is near an interfering device or something similar. Either way, if it works fine on your other computer then it is very unlikely that it is an actual Adium defect.

Some things to try:

  1. iChat - does it do the same thing?
  2. Streaming audio - do you encounter buffering issues if you set the buffer really low?
  3. Swapping out network parts - ie: network cards, cables, switching router ports.
  4. If wireless, try plugging it in.
  5. Get a debug log (see ReportingBugs)

If you are convinced this is Adium's fault, despite the fact that it clearly works on other computers without issue, then open another ticket with the results of all those steps included in the report.

I am seeing this same behavior. Is there any way to get a status update on its progress, or is this in pidgin's court?

Thanks, Ralph

This is becoming a show stopper. Aside from this issue, Adium is rock solid. But when outgoing messages don't get delivered, and there are no notification that the receiving party hasn't gotten it.. this is a pretty massive issue. This happens a couple of times a day.

I am gonna use Adium long enough to capture this issue in a tcpdump. But after that, I'm gonna have to go to the barely-likable iChat until this is fixed.

Can strings be pulled to move this issue along?

-Ralph

Hey Ralph,
I'm sorry you didn't even get an answer to your first question. Well, I'm afraid this lies much in the hands of the Pidgin guys, yes.
However, I have seen our lead developer help out on ICQ and AIM issues. Being little more than a veteran Adium user myself I don't know details about how logging in and such works, but a tcpdump sounds like something that might help.
Could you please also tell us some details about the way you are connected to the internet?
Are you running Adium 1.3?
Thanks in advance! :)

Closing all "waiting on libpurple" tickets. There's no reason to keep them around as open, and largely go ignored anyway. File a ticket at  http://developer.pidgin.im for any functionality you want to see.
