Description
Hello,
After updating to the latest Adium Version of v1.1.1 on my Mac v10.4.10, every time I try to initiate a conversation with someone on my MSN contact list the following error "Could not send; a connection error occurred" occurs. This never used to happen and up until 2-3 days ago, before the latest update, it was not an issue. People also cannot initiate conversation with me either and I fail to receive any messages. Could you please tell me what can be done about it, or if it is something to do with my Mac, however I find this unlikely.
Thanking you in advance,
James

After checking that, could you please try Adium 1.0.6 (link on adiumx.com at the bottom) and verify that this is new to 1.1 for you?

Thanks for the reply jkok. Usually when connecting via HTTP it works, which is odd. I have now disabled it and it fails to connect at all. I can only sign into msn with it selected.. As I mentioned, it is only since the latest update..
Evands, I have reverted back to 1.0.6 and disabled the http option. Once again, it fails to connect at all. When it is enabled, the same error occurs....

So it's a problem with the MSN network, then? You said that this was 'only since the latest update', but 1.0.6 doesn't work, either?
comment:5 in reply to: ↑ 3 Changed 4 years ago by datiger
I followed the exact same steps with the exact same results. You are not alone.
comment:6 Changed 4 years ago by motounlock
Yes, I am having the same problem. I cannot even ping messenger.hotmail.com. Anyone else?
comment:7 Changed 4 years ago by motounlock
For me the problem was PeerGuardian. Check to see if some third-party app is blocking your connection.
comment:8 Changed 4 years ago by Jam_LFC
personally i DID think it was just an update problem. I guess i was wrong.
Motounlock, i have not found PeerGuardian on my computer. i have no idea what kind of application would block the connection. It has to be my MSN network. any ideas? hmmm
comment:9 in reply to: ↑ description Changed 4 years ago by jerimrl
I, too, have had this problem since updating versions. I am set to connect via http to messenger.hotmail.com at port 80. I can, however, connect and send/receive messages if I use MSN messenger... I do not have PeerGuardian nor any other software firewall.
This is super frustrating - I use Adium because I much prefer it to MSN, but I guess have to switch back.
comment:10 Changed 4 years ago by jerimrl
Oh - OSX 10.4 & Adium 1.1.1.
comment:11 Changed 4 years ago by swilts
Same issue here. Tried going back to version 1.06 with no result, MSN still doesn't function correctly for me. I also tried turning off 'connect via http' and it made adium no longer able to connect at all to MSN so I switched it back on.

- Milestone set to Needs feedback from users
All users experiencing this problem: Have you ever used encryption in Adium before? It doesn't matter (as far as we know) how recently.
comment:13 Changed 4 years ago by jerimrl
No, never.
comment:14 Changed 4 years ago by swilts
Yes relatively often.
comment:15 Changed 4 years ago by swilts
Let me know if there's anything else I can do, you guys are awesome and I love adium.

I have used encryption, and I'm having the same problem here. Ticket #7688
I didn't see this ticket before... sorry. My ticket has some other details. Nothing special, but if you're all as desperate as I am, you're probably gonna chek it out anyways.
comment:17 follow-up: ↓ 19 Changed 4 years ago by Jam_LFC
i agree. i prefer adium over msn. Why would encryption make a difference? in my opinion, if it worked before and not now due to this new update, a patch or further update should be produced (pretty pleeeasse!!)
jerimrl i have a different port connection but i dont know if that makes a diff. any way of flagging the producers of this software?
comment:18 in reply to: ↑ 12 Changed 4 years ago by datiger
Never used encryption.
comment:19 in reply to: ↑ 17 Changed 4 years ago by elastic.implosion
I used version 1.1.1 for 4 days without a problem using the same configuration I always have, so I thought maybe it's not an Adium issue. I do know that everyone I know having this problem have either OS X 10.4.10 or 10.4.9 installed. Anyone else before I do an Archive and Install?

Please try this build and do the following:
- Connect
- Open the Adium Debug Window from the Adium menu
- Press the Clear button
- Open a chat with a contact and send a message such that you get the error message that it could not be sent
- Paste the contents of the debug window into a comment here, surrounded by the character `.
You can change the other person's name if you'd like.

It looks like 'write' is getting called when a 'read' is expected. I would be very interested to know if the current version of Pidgin is seeing the same problems, as it's possible this is a flaw in our event loop implementation in some way.
Do any of you who are seeing this have access to a Windows or Linux machine on which they could run Pidgin and test this out there? (OS X with X11 would work, too, of course, but is a major hassle to configure).

Used Pidgin in Fusion and it worked just fine.

I can confirm the latest version of Pidgin is experiencing the same issue. Please see the following bug for confirmation of the same HTTP bug affecting Pidgin Windows/Linux users:

Replying to evands:
So it's a problem with the MSN network, then? You said that this was 'only since the latest update', but 1.0.6 doesn't work, either?
I'm using Adium 1.0.6 with OS 10.3.9, and the "Could not send; a connection error occurred" now happens more often than not. It has steadily been becoming worse over the past few months. Funnily enough, it seems to happen mostly when I chat to people overseas. I now cannot use Adium MSN to chat to my girlfriend in Thailand at all. It simply won't work anymore (constant "Could not send; a connection error occurred" problem) but I can usually still chat with another friend in Sydney without error. If I log out of Adium MSN and use Microsoft Messenger, I can talk to everybody without any problems.
I am running behind a NAT firewall, but I doubt this is the problem as the official client always connects and sends messages without error, and I can still talk to my friends in Sydney. I can sometimes send messages successfully to people overseas, but more often than not it fails. It is not an MSN problem, because the official Microsoft Messenger always works just fine.
I have tried toggling the 'Connect via HTTP' setting, then logging out and logging back in, it does not help. I even tried changing the HTTP servers from gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:1863 to messenger.hotmail.com:80 with no result. Still can't talk to some people, but can talk to others.
I also verified, the other people I cannot chat to with Adium MSN are all using the official MSN clients for Windows. I wonder, is the key issue the location of the person we're trying to chat to? Has anybody else found the problem to be worse if they chat to overseas friends rather than people in the same city or country? Maybe the overseas MSN servers have slightly different response codes. I don't know, but it is something to consider.

comment:34 Changed 4 years ago by evands
This could easily be put in "Waiting on Libpurple"... and probably should be unless a developer who cares about MSN wants to take responsibility for figuring out and fixing this problem.
comment:35 Changed 4 years ago by Jam_LFC
Yeh but how can we change the status to "Waiting on Libpurple"? I'm going insane waiting to use Adium again. It's like losing a limb! What's with this Adium X 1.1.3 anyway? is there an update available yet?
comment:36 Changed 4 years ago by jas8522
- Summary changed from After updating to latest version, MSN conversations do not work. to MSN messages cannot be sent or received through HTTP mode connections
- Milestone changed from Adium X 1.1.3 to Waiting on libpurple
There's not much that can be done about this on Adium's end - not using Connect via HTTP works for those people who are not behind a firewall that blocks MSN. With any luck, the addition of the MSNP14 branch to Pidgin might also result in an update to the HTTP connection method and fix this problem. As Evan pointed out in the pidgin ticket (and Nuphor above), #p2638 is the dependancy for this one.

Hi all, I'm italian: sorry for my english but I hope you can understand.
I had the same problem with version 1.1.1 under Mac OS 10.4.10. I fixed this problem as workaround into Adium's preferences:
- in Account panel I've disabled cryptography (that i found enabled but i haven't set it) in any account were was on;
- in Advanced panel I've removed any fingerprint in any account.
Then i saved preferences and restart Adium. Now MSN seem to work fine. ==

Is it possible that we're looking at two different problems here? After following the steps xx_superblackbird described I still can't send messages.

Sorry now i think i had a different problem: my MSN messages cannot be sent or received in any way (HTTP on or off), now with HTTP off and previous preference's settings MSN works.
comment:40 Changed 4 years ago by datiger
I never used encryption and I still have the problem HTTP on or off does not matter. Worked fine in all versions prior to this one. No other network changes.
comment:41 Changed 4 years ago by Jam_LFC
agreed datiger. all settings in previous versions should really have no affect due to an upgrade.. all other previous upgrades have worked fine. hmm
comment:42 Changed 4 years ago by unclejy@…
This seriously sucks...nothing suggested above can solve this problem and obviously it's a bug with the new version. Like they said, we didn't experience any problems prior to this upgrade. Please find a way to fix it soon as it's very very annoying that I can't use this at all.
comment:43 Changed 4 years ago by datiger
Today I found out that our company does have a messenger auditor. The auditior has been online for years. I guess adium does not like the response it gets back from the auditor, because when I try adium at home it works fine.
comment:44 in reply to: ↑ description Changed 4 years ago by jerimrl
I use my computer at home behind a D-Link Xtreme N router - firewall settings are default. There is no corporate blocking involved.
I have tried http on and off and it doesn't seem to matter. I don't use encryption.
I can connect via MSN at the same time that I can't connect via Adium - but I think we've all established this isn't an MSN problem.
Could you clarify what "waiting for libpurple" means for the nondevelopers out here?
comment:45 follow-up: ↓ 47 Changed 4 years ago by elastic.implosion
After a week it finally works. I believe I had tried this before with no luck, but it seems to work now, even behind a router. So, I removed the "Connect via HTTP" option and instead of using port 80, I'm using port 1863. Now I can send and recieve. Sadly I spend most of my time at work where port 1863 is blocked... so it's still kinda useless.
Hope this works for you all.
comment:46 Changed 4 years ago by Maeve
This problem has been driving me nuts for weeks! So glad to see it listed here.
I've never used an HTTP connection, and often can use MSN for a while before the errors begin. I am not behind a firewall. I tried xx_superblackbird's suggestions (assuming "cryptography" = encrypted chat), and also elastic.implosion's. I was already using port 1863 and couldn't get it to connect at all if I switched to port 80, just to see if it helped.
I hope jas8522 will change the summary as it's certainly an Adium issue, and HTTP seems to have nothing to do with it.
comment:47 in reply to: ↑ 45 ; follow-up: ↓ 48 Changed 4 years ago by elastic.implosion
Follow up on my last comment.
So the IT guy at work opened up port 1863 for my wife and me, and though we have exactly the same configuration (both on our computers/adium and the network) her Adium works perfectly, but mine won't send or recieve!!!

Does anyone know if this is ever going to be able to fixed or not? I've also heard the same problem is happening for Mercury Messenger
comment:49 Changed 4 years ago by svdsmac
I've been doing some testing with natting on my router, changing firewall setting, disabling firewall,... but I can't get adium to work. The strange thing is it logs on and I see who is online but apparently they can't see me. So for me the problem is not with adium, directly. What I think happend is that when the people "at msn" changed to version 7 of msn-messenger they changed something in the way the computer (or chatting program) speaks with there machines. The same thing happend when they changed to version 4 or 5. So I would like to ask the people at adium to have a closer look at this problem because I realy like adium and I would hate it not to be able to use it anymore. Thanks you.

Of course it works after unchecking connect via HTTP. Doing so makes MSN connect normally, and in an environment where you can actually connect normally connecting via HTTP isn't necessary. In environments where HTTP is the only viable way to connect, people use the connect via HTTP method to connect on port 80.
There's a lot of people here posting to say "it works again after unchecking connect via HTTP" and none of these reports are helpful because if you can connect without using HTTP you shouldn't really have to use the HTTP method anyway. As well as this, connecting via HTTP is where the problem lies, not in connecting normally over port 1893.

Basically my msn never connected before via any port with the http deselected. that's what i was trying to say. it wouldn't sign in or anything. It didnt make sense. When in Halls at uni i HAD to have http selected otherwise it wouldn't work. When i go back however, we'll see if my current settings work

Im just another user with the same problems. To summarise..
Like Jam_LFC, Ive never been able to connect in any other way than http, despite forwarding the relevant port on my router. My router is Wireless ADSL, Belkin, cant find the model number.
Since two weeks ago, Ive been able to log in via http, can see other users, but can not send anything without a connection error. There is a consistent 3 second delay between sending and "Could not send; a connection error occurred."

This reminds me of how important it is to donate. Even if the problem doesn't get solved, this issue shows how much I need this App. It's definitely worth a good donation.
BTW: Update didn't work for me. Still can't send/recieve.

I've never connected via HTTP and I have the problem, too, so I don't think that the HTTP setting is necessarily the issue. I checked it after finding this thread to see if it made a difference, but it doesn't connect that way for me at all. With the box unchecked, as it always was until I learned here that there was another option, I get the connection error regardless. It'll work for a while, and then it's all over until I restart Adium--and sometimes after.

I got mine working again, although didn't test it as controlled as I should have:
1 - upgraded versions to 1.1.2 2 - unchecked connect via http (this didn't work before the upgrade) 3 - changed port to 1863
And, I'm able to send/receive via MSN. Cool.

Considering this is such a major bug, I certainly hope an update is released to fix an OS 10.3 version of Adium. If not, it's bye-bye to Adium for me. I know that according to Adium update logs supposedly a very small percentage of people are still using 10.3, but I cannot use 10.4 in my line of work for many reasons (one being the complete inability to search network volumes), and I dearly love using Adium! I also have many business clients and elderly clients who simply cannot budget or justify spending Aus$199 on 10.4 when it doesn't add any features that they need.
Fingers crossed...

Found something that apparently doesn's work anymore. In my contacts list I change the names of my contacts in order to keep track of who is who. Before I was able to move my mouse over a contact, keep it still for a moment and then the contacts thumb would appear, together with there "own names" (the name they fill in themselves) in a text-bubble. This bubble isn't showing anymore...
cheers

That's a known problem (#7937) and is not permanent (closing and re-opening the list window fixes it). It's also not related to this ticket at all...

Oh ok, didn't know that, just thought it had something to do with the beta version. Thanks.

This looks similar to ticket #7675.
I experienced the same situation yesterday. After some time I found out that disabling the option Connect via HTTP made my account work again.
You can find that option in Preferences -> Accounts --> Edit your MSN account -> tab Options.
