Description

In the advanced tab pane, there no longer exists a 'message history'section. How do I change the number of history messages that appears in each new chat window now??

Change History

Changed 3 years ago by evands

You can't. What number did you have it set to?

There's been a fair number of questions related to the number of messages, but I've yet to see anybody ask for the "when we last spoke" option back.

I don't necessarily want the full configuration back in preferences, but I'd really like to have a hidden pref to change the number of lines of history that are displayed. (I was hoping to figure out where this was set and make a plugin, but even after digging though the diffs, source, nibs, etc, I still can't seem to make it display more than five lines.)

I think that a skype-like soultions would be an improvement, but I'd still prefer the ability to automatically display X lines. I didn't always want or need the history, but I enjoyed seeing it. Sometimes I'd notice that there was a previous question that had gone unanswered, or I'd remember that I needed to so something.

Was the performance issue (and the complications of debugging it) caused only by users not appreciating how much lag would be caused by specifying too many lines? Or is it more complicated than that?

The only problem we'd seen was crazy people setting 999 lines or the like and then complaining about performance.

As far as I'm concerned, the real question we were asking to the world at large was, "Is this a level complexity which was actually needed?" The consensus seems to be that the # configuration is desirable... but I've heard exactly 1 person ask for the other options back.

I'm one of the crazies that has used 999, but I've never complained about performance. :) At some point the lag became too great (probably when I had accumulated a significant amount of history (probably still well below 999)) and I lowered it to a less crazy 99. I never experienced a problem there, but I may be more patient than most.

Yeah, I don't care about the other thing, just the #. And I only even want it adjustable (even through obscure means) just because I accept that the # I'd prefer would likely be a bad default.

Thanks for your consideration. :)

  • milestone set to Needs feedback from users

In this case, perhaps just having it in a plist would be enough - since only a couple people want to change it...

I would really like to be able to set the number of previous lines to display (again). Just having it in a plist would be fine for me. Thanks.

I'd really like to see ist back, at least the number of messages if not all the options. Just put it in a plist or under the "advanced" (the rightmost one, "erweitert" in german) tab.

I would also like to see this feature back. If it's in a plist I can edit that too, just to have more than a couple of lines available would be really nice; I wanted to see the same messages I had when I closed the window and re-opened it. Maybe it's because they were leftover from yesterday but it was frustrating to have to go back into the log interface rather than just have it still up after restarting.

Thanks!

Couldn't the maximum simply be set to a significantly lower number than the previous max (999, I think), so as to prevent performance issues but still have the option there?

  • status changed from new to closed
  • resolution set to fixed
  • milestone changed from Needs feedback from users to Adium X 1.2

This is user adjustable again for 1.2 in the general prefs.
