Problems sending MSN messages.

Reported by: CRC Owned by: nobody
Milestone: Component: Service/MSN
Version: 1.0.3 Severity: normal
Keywords: msn message error problem contact available Cc:
Patch Status:

Description

When trying to send MSN messages to some contacts, I get messages such as:

Steve 10:01:13 yo 10:01 Could not send because user@… is not available. Steve 10:01:18 hey 10:01 Could not send because user@… is not available.

The contact never gets my message. This message comes back about 1 second after pressing enter - however it does not happen to all of my contacts.

Oh, I forgot to add, the contact I am trying to send message to is online, and available when this message comes up.

CRC: do they only appear to be online to you because they've been talking to you and in actual fact are set to appear offline? Or is their status actually set to online? If appear offline then #6756

Any idea if they have some 'odd' configuration like custom statuses via MSN+ or something like that?

comment:3 Changed 5 years ago by CRC

There is no odd status that I can see. The user is online. This is happening even if they send a message to me first.

I can confirm the same problem. I have tried this twice, with two different users.

The user appears to be online, logging out and in again makes no difference.

In addition I can update that I had my user write me once, and then I could reply and chat worked as it should...

comment:6 Changed 5 years ago by houmark

And sorry to write again, but I now waited two minutes with replying in the very same chat. I then again received the error: "Could not send because user@… is not available."

I am pretty sure this error is related to the newest version (1.0.3). I have not seen it before.

I updates to 1.0.3 and this happens for me for every single MSN contact, regardless of their status (if they're visible, obviously).

The only way for me to speak to someone is if they already initiated the conversation with me by sending me a message (or by them opening a chat with me, I guess... But I can't track that).

From this I gather that Adium isn't sending the "initiate chat" message, or whatever to the other user.

Any of you encountering this still having the problem with the AdiumBeta?

Replying to jas8522:

Yes, I've encountered this with both 1.0.3 and 1.0.4b2.

I also have now encountered this! Only happened with the one contact (that I can tell). Contact was intially a metacontact with 2 MSN accounts and a Gtalk account. One MSN account was offline, so I figured I'd remove that one from the metacontact. But then it was still occuring. So I removed the gtalk account as well. Now it's just the online MSN account and I still get that error when I try to message him.

This was while using 1.1svn.

Happens to me with just one contact (never been metacontact) wich uses Adium too (1.0.3)... she can msg me but i can't do the same... I haven't experienced the same with any other contact.

  • priority changed from normal to high

This may be an issue with the MSN server... I just encountered it with a different contact than the one in my debug log. Signed in on Microsoft Messenger and still couldn't communicate with him. I got:

The following message could not be delivered

From Microsoft Messenger.

With the number of people encountering it and not being able to properly communicate I'm raising the priority, although this may be server related and have nothing to do with the Adium code.

Have this problem both with Adium 1.0.3 on my Mac at home and with Gaim 2.0.0-0.26 on Linux here at the office.

Problem seams to appear with contacts using the latest official MSN client for Windows. Not having any problems with people using third party clients or older MSN clients.

This seems to have stopped happening since i upgraded to latest revision of SVN and 1.0.4b3 . . . anyone else still encountering it?

comment:16 Changed 5 years ago by CRC

This has stopped happening to me when sending messages from MSN Messenger to other MSN Messenger contacts. I believe it may have been an issue with the MSN Servers - however I have no proof as to if this is the case.

comment:17 Changed 5 years ago by wallyworth

The problem seems solved for me -- not sure if it's something at Microsoft's end of things or because I downloaded 1.0.4b3, but either way it's working!

comment:18 Changed 5 years ago by CRC

I asked one of the contacts that I was having trouble sending messages to if others were having issues, and it seems that lots of people were having problems sending him messages. This included users of Microsofts MSN client.

I'm starting to think this is a "blame Microsoft" issue.

If nobody states that this issue is still happening in ~48 hours, I'd say this is good to close.

  • Status changed from new to closed
  • Resolution set to invalid

I agree - seems to be a server issue since it's all cleared up and errors were also occuring on other clients.
