Cannot send messages on MSN

Reported by: nickshanks Owned by: nobody
Milestone: Component: Service/MSN
Version: 1.0.3 Severity: normal
Keywords: msn could not send connection error message Cc:
Patch Status:

Description

Since approximatly August of 2006 I have been unable to send messages via MSN. I can log in and receive messages just fine. I disabled my MSN account assuming it was a temporary glitch in the trunk, and since 1.0 was recently released I updated and re-enabled my MSN account only to find that you had not fixed the problem.

Basically, one minute after sending a message to someone on MSN, I get an error: "A message may not have been sent; a timeout occurred." Followed nine minutes later by: "Could not send; a connection error occurred."

It is clear from the actions of the recipient that they do not get any of my messages. Things like "Hellooooo?" and a few minutes late "Why are you ignoring me?" followed by "Fine then, be an arrogant cunt." and the loss of another friend. Please fix this soon, I am fast running out of friends.

I have the same problem for a long time as well. I was hoping you guys would fix this with 1.0.

Please remove this bug, I can't use Adium for MSN and have to use the stupid MS Messenger...

Thanks!

yup, same problem here... and sometimes i send a message, get the "Could not send; a connection error occurred." error and then the person replies, so i have no idea which messages are sent and which aren't. also if i close the chat window immediately after sending a message, i ALWAYS get the "could not send...blahblah" crap please, fix

same problem , thanks for fixing it

Could someone please add this to Mileston 1.0.2? Very annoying...

This problem occured to me throughout the Adium 1.0 beta and there was a bug report filed about it but it was never fixed. It seems to occur when an internet connection drop occurs briefly. Once reconnected, Adium seems to be put in an inconsistent state and the only way to fix this error is to either reconnect to MSN using the preferences panel or restart Adium.

No, this bug doesn't require disconnection or dropouts, it simply doesn't work at all.

It seems like the problem only occurs if you make MSN connect through HTTP. I disabled that option, now it works fine...

Changed 3 years ago by jas8522

Can anyone else confirm that about disabling the use of HTTP port connectivity? I have never had this occur, as with many other users of Adium, so it's extremely unlikely that it's an overall problem with Adium's connectivity. It's much more likely that it's a problem with one of the following:

1) Adium config - like the connect through HTTP option being enabled (which may be a bug in itself?) 2) Firewall/Router issue, although I've definitely got a router and it does not seem to present a problem, certain router configurations or models might be an issue.

The first one can be solved by deleting your Adium config files in Application Support (~/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0) if disabling HTTP connectivity doesn't solve it. I suggest backing them up by just moving them on to the desktop or something similar.

I'm not losing friends over it, but it is extremely frustrating.

I am experiencing exactly this issue, and have been from 0.89 right through the betas to current running version 1.0.3.

- HTTP proxy setting makes no difference. - The error is random, disconnecting and reconnecting MSN, or Adium will restart the conversation.

I'll keep an eye on this thread and test any suggestions you have, and respond.

WarWraith,

If you are able to consistently reproduce this problem, please try  this beta release and enable debug loggin from the Adium menu -> debug window. Please attach the log here (or the portion pertaining to the time frame from which you were able to produce the problem).

I installed 1.0.4b3 right after commenting on the ticket, and can confirm that the bug is still present.

Will install 1.0.4b1 and report back.
