This may not be 'politically correct' on another developer's forum :) , but of all IM clients that I've tried, Icy Juice seems to handle encodings best, though it doesn't even come close to the level of customizability that Adium offers (but it does have visibiity settings).
If you want to de-scramble the gibberish that you receive when offline, download Cyrillic Clipboard Converter from http://www.apple.ru/software/ (the first one in the gray box on the right). It is not exactly intuitive, but actually easy to use. Copy to clipboard, click on the app'sdock icon, paste. If it doesn't work the first time, try to hand pick from the 'Convert from...' or 'Convert to..." menu. Good luck!
Anyhow, I hope that this (along with visibility/invisibility lists) is addressed in Adium, coz it's a very cool app otherwise!

- Milestone changed from Adium X 0.90 (Old) to Adium X 0.90
Is this with ICQ official or some other client?

same trouble. I can't read any offline messages. And it does't depend of what icq client used to send message. Also , if i'm in invisible mode, i can't get readble message too. Adium Ver. x0.86 Mac Os X10.4.3

I don't know how it is done now, but the encoding settings for ICQ accounts should be also used for status messages and user info. This problem also happens with Hebrew characters, and my guess is that with every other characters that can't be encoded with ISO-8859-1.

Forgot to say the most obvious thing - the encoding should also be used for offline messages :)

According to the Gaim 2.0.0 changelog, this is fixed in libgaim 2.0.0 (and therefore for Adium 1.0).

In Adium 0.88 this problem still exists. And more: there's a lot of problems with encodings even if you're online. For example in previous versions of Adium (0.83 for example) there wasn't any problems with encodings.
