msn prints weird info in front of my posts

Reported by: flemming@mindlessstudio.com Owned by: nobody
Milestone: Adium X 1.0 Component: Service/MSN
Version: 1.0svn Severity: major
Keywords: msn, nickname, code added before posts, msnobj, 3057, 3186, 3187, 3448, 3553, 3641, 3846, 4876, 5044 Cc:

Description (last modified by evands) (diff)

After updating to 0.87, Adium prints stuff like this:

<msnobj Creator="rasputintheviking@…" Size="17763" Type="3" Location="TFR2C2.tmp" Friendly="AAA=" SHA1D="wCK3TZ4B2nVxfj

before what I write whenever I write anything to an MSN friend. If I post multiple messages before he or she replies, those messages don't have the cryptic stuff before them; it's only when starting an MSN chat and for every reply I do to any message I receive in msn.

I'm on OS X 10.4.3, and the problem is there on all three of my macs (running Adium 0.87 on all of them). I use a mac.com account for my msn-contacts ...

best regards,

Flemming

same problem here, since upgrading to Adium 0.88. I'm not sure which version I ran before but it's likely it was the one right before that as I always update immediately when a new version is announced.

I'm not sure the other side sees it and when I look at the log file, the strange msnobj Creator code is not there anymore.

I had the same problem described here until I deleted the MSN animtated emoticons...

  • milestone set to Adium X 1.0

Can someone install the MSN animated emoticons and take a look to see if that causes this issue?

Changed 3 years ago by anonymous

i guess it's not the MSN animated emoticons.

i have it installed but no problems (before and after newest version as well). a relative of mine has same problems as described above (msnobj Creator code) but no MSN animated emoticons installed at all.

we both are using adium 0.89, OS X.4.4. I have PPC G5 and he has PB G4.

If you're seeing this issue, please indicate here what your MSN Display Name is.

I'm the PPC G5 user from above.

My relative's display name in MSN is:

Nickname: <msnobj Creator="sepp.r@…" Size="9018" Type="3" Location="TFR2C2.tmp" Friendly="AAA=" SHA1D="HOQ1BaGNSPTolGmUEiQ4FEfXC+Y=

(The e-mail address is a fake because he doesn't want to publish his.)

This issue appeared first time using 0.87. Today, he's put first time ever a display name manually. The code disappeared and his new name keeps staying there also after restarting adium.

(I changed my display name already a couple of adium-versions before and have still no problems at all.)

Hope this helps a bit.

Pascal: To clarify: Nickname: <msnobj Creator="sepp.r@…" Size="9018" Type="3" Location="TFR2C2.tmp" Friendly="AAA=" SHA1D="HOQ1BaGNSPTolGmUEiQ4FEfXC+Y= appeared as his display name to you (but not to him) while he had nothing set as a display name within Adium? And this junk code was replaced by the name he set when he did set a display name manually, and since setting a display name it has been fine?

Did the 'code' display name appear for you in all places (such as his contact list entry) or just in messages?

What client/version is your relative using?

Changed 3 years ago by Pascal

My relative's situation: He's using Adium version 0.89. The Code was appearing since version 0.87. The problem was only in MSN (AIM and ICQ are fine). Before he changed manually the display name, the code had been visible there, where you change it (preferences) and was also appearing in his chat window. He replaced it manually, and since setting a display name it's been fine. So, there is no Code visible anymore. It is even impossible to reproduce the Code again by writing nothing into display name.

My situation: I'm using Adium 0.89. I saw his Code since version 0.87. Also only MSN (AIM and ICQ are fine). His Code appeared only in my contact list and contact info but not in the messages. (But, actually, also his new name only appears in my contact list and contact info but not in the messages. I don't know if this is because of preferences concering addressbook or using alias.) Since setting a display name, it's been fine here too.

I'm affected by this issue. To evands: my nickname is ispamthereforiam@…, which is a regular passport login. (Note: this is obviously slightly modified to prevent spam; the domain part is the same though).

Other contacts saw the <msnobj ...> string in front of my posts. My nickname as displayed in the Adium preferences was normal. I fixed it by re-entering my nickname in the Adium preferences. Is it coincidence, or are the only people were the nickname is also changed in the preferences those with a dot Mac account?

When signing onto MSN as invisible today using 1.0svn, my screen name was displayed as an xml string. Screenshot attached.

Signed onto webmessenger.msn.com and used MSN over the website (an offical web based client) and my display name was overriden with the msnobj xml stuff.

Maybe it's a problem with the protocol?

I get the same problem. I tried MSN Messenger on my PC, and get the same problem. I also get the same problem when I use Trillian on my PC. Every time I get this problem when I am talking to an MSN Messenger user, regardless of whether I am using MSN Messenger on a PC, Adium on a Mac, or Trillian on a PC. Whenever I chat to a Yahoo messenger person on Adium, there is no problem. My conclusion is that the problem must be on the MSN Messenger server side.

Finally get it fixed. In Adium, go to preferences, click on your acct and choose edit. Then delete those funny word on personal box.

This bug is fixed in Adium 1.0 -- the "weird info" mentioned in the original description will no longer be used if retrieved from the server. The fix was made in [17713].
